MODEL 98 MAUSER SPORTER BY LENARD BROWNELL WITH
SCOPE. Cal. 30-06. S# K7525. According to a descendant of Lenard Brownell this rifle is NOT Brownell’s work. The makers mark on the action is that of an unknown, but skilled craftsman. This rifle has 25" tapered round medium weight barrel fitted with adjustable one leaf rear express sight in island base and silver bead in sleeved on ramp with protector. A sling loop is also sleeved on. Barrel is unmarked. Model 98 action by DWM is marked with S# and Brownell's "LMB" logo on right side of receiver ring. Action is fitted with Leupold scope bases. Bolt body is polished and engine turned, handle is lowered and knob is well shaped, flattened on botton. An aftermarket bolt shroud is fitted with Model 70 type safety. A commercial trigger is fitted, bottom metal with well reshaped bow has hinged floorplate, secured by buttom in trigger guard bow. Stock made of a dense piece of what appears to be European walnut which has some light fiddle figure measures 13 3/8" over opensided pad. Stock features interesting mahogany short schnabled tip as well as pointed inlay behind grip. A sling loop, rosewood grip cap and recoil bolt are also installed. Checkering is exceptionally fine and very attractive in fleur-de-lis pattern with rounded line borders. Fleur de lis are outlined in thin continuation of borders with central areas stippled. Rifle is fitted witih Lyman All American 2 1/2X scope with fine crosshair reticle in Leupold rings. CONDITION: fine, metal parts retaining all their brownish hued rust blue. Stock has minor number of marks and scratches in its original hand rubbed oil finish, mostly on right side of butt, and left side under bolt stop.
