Merwin & Hulbert Pocket Army .44-40 caliber revolver factory “Floral intaglio” engraved with panel scene of mercury and period inscribed to “E.P. Colgan, Sheriff, Dec 25, 1887 From D. Behmer”. Refer the story of the Merwin and Hulbert by Art Phelps pages 86 and 104. This well-known M&H was formerly in the Christian De Guigne and Art Phelps collections. Edgar Power Colgan was the Sheriff of Sonoma County in the wine country of California, elected 1887 and served for two termswhere the bear flag was first raised. He became the controller of the entire state and by all accounts was an honest and dutiful politician serving the will of the people and obeying the public trust bestowed upon him. What a novel idea! A research folder with interesting period accounts is included. The revolver remains in original good to very good condition with 40%-60% original nickel that has drifted and flaked. The areas where the nickel has lifted has gone to adark and gray patina. Some light to moderate pitting and erosion. The left grip is very good. The right grip shows a large chip and piece is missing. The markings are good. The cylinder does not revolve and the action needs minor repairs.
