Most Unusual Antique Probably European Breechloading Short Rifle, Unmarked as to Maker or Origin, NVSN, .577 cal., unmarked 24" round barrel has dovetailed blade front and folding-leaf rear sights; 1.25" breech section has percussion nipple-type fitting that may have been intended to house a firing pin, and a 4.25" "receiver" threaded into back end with a 1.25" opening for loading/extracting metallic cartridges (receiver was never completed, as it is open at rear). Unmarked flat lockplate with large military-style hammer. Steel fittings include trigger guard with long rear tang, buttplate, 2 clamping bands, nosecap. Lack of a ramrod indicates likely mfg'd as a cartridge arm. 3/4 stock of oil-finished walnut has small wrist area with inlet iron "keyhole" plate for an unknown attachment. Condition is good to very good as configured, the barrel retaining what appears to be much thinning and dulling original blue, balance of the metal reblued over occasional pitting. Stock is sound showing 1.75" replaced wood at toe, scattered minor dings, later varnish. Hammer and trigger function, brilliant bore shows sharp and deep rifling. Possibly an inventor's model due to its unfinished state or intended as an experimental/trials piece. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
