A fine sextant, likely of the early 19th century, constructed mostly of ebony and brass. The sextant itself measures approx. 11 1/2" x 10" at its widest point. The center of the sextant is inlaid with a certifiably antique ivory panel that reads "W H MORALEE NTH SHIELDS". Below this is a longer inlaid, certifiably antique ivory panel engraved with gradients between 0 and 105. The brass swingarm has a small, certifiably antique ivory panel that has gradients of 0 to 20 engraved upon it. The sextant is held in its original wooden case with two eyepieces contained within a wooden block. The label in the case reads, in part, "Agents to Parkinson & Frodsha__ Chronometers & Watch Makers _.G. Baker & Juliao Sonyea_ 18 Rua do Hospicio no 18,". This label is pasted over an earlier label that reads, at the base, __o de Janeiro." CONDITION: The sextant is tarnished with some verdigris, but all parts move well, and the instrument appears fully functional. The case shows expected storage wear, and a small 6" x 3" triangular piece of wood is missing from the edge; the hinges and clasp are intact and functional. (02-23634/BF). $300-500.
