NEW YORK REGIMENT MARKED SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1884
TRAPDOOR SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 542902. Bbl 32 5/8". Model 1884 Trapdoor single shot rifle manufactured by Springfield Armory. The lockplate is stamped with a patriotic eagle beside "U S/ SPRINGFIELD". The left side of the barrel is stamped with a "V/P" proof, above an eagle head and "P" proof mark. The stock is stamped "8/NY/107" on the top of the comb, with a near identical stamp present on the buttplate tang. Right side of buttstock is lightly carved "SB". Stock is stamped with what appears to be an "JWP" or "SWP" over 1892 cartouche on the left side. 1 piece smooth wood buttstock. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Springfield Research letter indicating issuance of this rifle to the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1898. The 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was reconstituted for the Spanish American war and was brought into service on May 12-13th of 1898, consisting of 47 officers and 896 enlisted men. By the time the regiment was mustered out on January 21st of 1899, the regiment was comprised of 46 officers and 1,172 enlisted men. During its service, the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment had 1 officer and 3 enlisted men wounded, with 25 enlisted men having died of disease. CONDITION: metal components exhibit a dark brown patina, with some spots of old oxidation overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting a couple scattered spots of pitting and retaining strong rifling throughout. Stock shows scattered marks and impressions from storage and handling, but otherwise remains sturdy and serviceable. (01-24138/MLW). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
