NICELY CURLED, ATTRACTIVE FLINTLOCK RIFLE

ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE SMITH FROM NEW BERLIN, PA. Cal. 50 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 48 3/4" oct. to rnd. Overall length 62 1/4". This attractive, curly maple Kentucky has been attributed to George Smith. Has a 4 piece brass engraved patchbox w/ 4 piercings, 21 silver inlays, 4 1/2" brass toeplate & a sm. 4" saddle plate. The stock is incised carved forward, under & rear of the cheekpiece as well as being nicely carved around bbl. tang. The cheekpiece features a silver “American eagle”. This rifle was made circa 1817. CONDITION: there is one silver inlay missing on cheekpiece, another is missing forward of the sideplate. 10x1/4" Sliver of wood is replaced along the bbl. forward of lock. Top of one star bbl. pin inlay, where wood was replaced, is missing. 1 3/4x1/4" brass plate has been inlet on the front of the forestock to cover missing wood in that area. Stock has been shortened 1/2" from the muzzle. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19634/RG). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
