NICELY REFURBISHED L.C. SMITH CROWN GRADE EJECTOR

SINGLE TRIGGER DOUBLE SHOTGUN MADE FOR MR. GIFFORD K. SIMOND, OWNER AND PRESIDENT OF THE HUNTER ARMS CO. FROM 1920-1929. Cal. 12 Ga. S# FWE52727. The crown grade was a fairly popular gun in the Hunter lineup with approx. 900 made. They were attractively finished and could be made to order. This gun has 26" bbls. with slightly raised matted rib marked "L.C. SMITH" "Crown GRADE" "MADE TO ORDER BY THE Hunter Arms Co., Inc. FULTON, N.Y." on tops. Rear portion of rib has geometric engraving and is separated from front portion by a gold band. There are also bands of geometric engraving around muzzles. Breech ends of bbls. are engraved with 1 1/2" triangles scroll in front of single geometric bands. Engine turned bbl. flats are stamped with serial number and Hunter proofs. Bottoms of bbls. and are stamped with "Nitro Steel" logos. Casehardened featherweight action features nonautomatic safety, usual rotary bolt, and Hunter One trigger as marked on side of trigger plate. Action is engraved in usual "Crown" style with about 40% coverage of scroll with rose blossom highlights within geometric borders. Lockplates are near fully engraved with matching scroll and blossoms flanking central oval semi relief vignettes of bird dogs. A pair of pointers, one on point, the other honoring; in grassy meadow is on left plate, a pair of setters in similar situation are on right. "L.C. Smith" is on scrolled ribbon at the front of each lockplate. Top lever pivot is gold inlaid with usual regal crown. Blued trigger guard is gold inlaid with "G.K. Simond's" signature. This treatment is found on other custom made high grade L.C. Smith guns. The replacement capped pistol grip buttstock, of attractive crotch figured American walnut, measures 14 1/4" over a ribbed hard rubber buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Splinter, ejector forend with inlet ebony tip and line and scroll engraved iron is near fully checkered and appears to be original. It has usual "J" spring and secondary latch in guitar shaped escutcheon. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS.: Bore Diameter: R: .730", L: .731". Restrictions: R: .014" (LIGHT MOD), L: .032" (FULL). Minimum Wall Thickness: R: .022", L: .019". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/2". DAC: 1 11/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14 1/4". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 9 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: relatively new green canvas case with leather corners lined in green felt, has reproduction paper L.C. Smith label in lid. CONDITION: very fine as refurbished. Bbls. retaining essentially all of a satin reblue. Action and lockplates retain nearly all of a dark casehardened recolor. Trigger guard has nearly all of its shiny reblue. Newly made buttstock is correctly styled and retains essentially all of its fine hand rubbed oil finish. Checkering is still light in color. Forend wood retains most of its matching refinish. Checkering is competently recut. Bores are bright and shiny with evidence of multiple dent removal in left bbl. and one in right about 9" behind muzzle. Mechanically crisp; with strong ejectors and well regulated single trigger. Case is good. An attractive and historically important L.C. Smith. (22-1068/MGM). CURIO. $10,000-20,000.
