FLINTLOCK FOWLER. Cal. 60. S# NSN. The 39" twist octagon to round barrel is inlaid with flush silver wire in the form of scroll and geometric patterns. A large crowned platinum poincon at breech end is marked "ROCH" "US" "SUHL" "DUT" (?) . A second mark is of a trotting horse (maker not found). Barrel tang with scroll engraving is marked "2". Chamfered lock with serpentine cock has inset faceted pan, unbridled friction frizzen, feather spring has large scrolled finial. Lockplate and face of cock are very finely relief engraved with scenes of horse and rider, pipe playing pan, along with helmets and arms. Half stock of crotch figured European walnut attaches to barrel with slip on gilded brass collar in Viennese manner. Mouldings are around lock, sideplate, barrel channel and other gilded brass fittings. Raised carved scroll is around trigger guard tang and at juncture of grip and butt. A deep moulding runs along toeline. All fittings are of very fancy relief cast brass that has been gold plated. These decorations are in the form of human and animal figures surrounded by acanthus scroll. Hickory ramrod with brass tip mounts through single brass pipe soldered to bottom of barrel with another smaller pipe mounted in stock with matching thimble. CONDITION: fine as attractively restored. Barrel retaining over 90% brown finish with excellent definition to pattern. Lock is cleaned to silver gray. Stock has French polish refinish over many old marks and has some subsequent scratches. Brass furniture has been re-gilded and is quite bright. Bore is fairly shiny but shows some pitting. Lock is good. (01-23959/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,500-6,500.
