Named U.S. Model 1852 Naval Officer's Sword, by Ames, 30'' etched blade, 36'' overall, with wire wrapped skate grip and gold-plated bronze crossguard. Right side of blade etched ''Martin Devington '79'''. Martin Devington (1857-1906) graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1879 as an Engineer, became Chief Engineer on the Battleship USS Kentucky (BB-6), and while on board visited Manilla, Nanking, Hong Kong, Nagasaki, Kobi, and Yokohoma. He was on board when U.S. Marines were landed in Cuba during the Cuban Insurrection, where he died immediately afterwards from Bright's disease. Condition of sword is good with moderate even corrosion to blade. Wire wrap is missing, as is scabbard. Gilt remains bright showing approx. 85% gold. Est.: $500-$750.
