The Water Bird / Peyote Bird design, which was a Plains Indian motif celebrating the rain that gave life, the rivers that carried the water, and the process of renewal, has been associated with the Native American Church since the early 1900s..
The Water Bird is a symbol of the renewal of life, rainy seasons, rivers, distant travel, distant vision & wisdom. It is often also referred to as the Peyote Bird because the Water Bird plays a significant part in the Native American Indian Church Peyote meetings and, in fact, since the early 1900's has been the symbol of the NAC.

As with many native cultures, wealth was often worn in the form of adornment, and in many early photographs of the Navajo and other Southwestern Native peoples, it is clear that Squash Blossom Necklaces were worn with pride and reverence for their beauty and inherent value.
While the necklaces do not have a specific ceremonial use, they were worn as a symbol of one's status, wealth and cultural belonging. And the bigger, the better, Dubin said: “You wore your wealth in these cultures—you wore your silver, you wore your turquoise.”
The Naja or crescent is a symbol of the Rainbow Guardian, a Yei that surrounds the homeland of the Navajo. Rainbow Guardian touches all four of the Sacred Mountains. It symbolizes protection and living in harmony while living in the boundaries of the Four Sacred Mountains. All at once, squash blossoms necklaces are an investment in fine art, a piece of American history, and a talisman full of meaning and purpose. For many Native American jewelry collectors, a southwestern wardrobe is incomplete without a squash blossom necklace. Although they are extremely beautiful, their beauty goes beyond simple aesthetics to hold something of the refined glimmer and history of the Southwest itself.
