This trip is for a 3 days of dark house spearing in Northern Minnesota for up to 2 people. Spearing will be on Swan Lake in Pengilly, Minnesota or a surrounding lake. Pengilly is located approximately 4 hours north of Minneapolis and 1.5 hours from Duluth.
Spear fishing can best be described as hunting for fish. You can watch a fish come in and make the determination if you want to harvest it or not.
Dark house spear fishing is done out of either a permanent or portable fish house. A large hole is cut in the ice. The darkness inside the fish house allows the fisherman to see down into the lake and watch for fish. A decoy – either real or artificial – is used to attract northern pike into the hole opening. A handheld spear is then “thrown” to harvest the fish.
Because this style of fishing is dependant on cold weather to form ice, the actual starting date of the spearing season can fluctuate. Ice needs to be at least 4” thick to safely travel on. Additionally during the ice fishing season the weather can fluctuate greatly; from below zero to in the 40’s. Although the fish houses have heaters, cold weather clothing and boots are a must.
Minnesota allows spear fishing for Northern Pike. The season runs from November 15 through the last Sunday in February, from sunrise to sunset. We are in the North central Northern Pike zone, with a possession limit of 10 fish – with 2 northern pike over 26” and none between 22” and 26’ or 1 from 22’ to 26” and one over 26”. The remainder of the limit needs to be less than 22” in length.
A Minnesota fishing license and a spearing license are required. Minnesota has different license types available; annual, 7 day, 72 hour and 24 hour. Licenses are available on line or locally. www.mndnr.gov/fishing.
Lodging and food are NOT included. Lodging is available in Grand Rapids MN, Hibbing MN and at MJ’s resort on Swan Lake.
We will provide the Minnesota Spearing license, fish houses with heaters, spears, and decoy minnows (if desired) and artificial decoys.
Additional ice fishing opportunities for pan fish are also available.
