Cal. 30-06. S# 1564279. Bbl. 24". Bbl. is marked on right side "SA D7312555 3 53 A 1916" "crossed cannons". Throat gauges 1.0. Muzzle gauges 1.0. The M1D Sniper rifle was designed during WWII by John Garand but was not produced in quantity until the Korean War. The M1D scope mounting system was considered more durable than its predecessor M1C. The rifles were made at Springfield by converting M1 Garand service rifles. This work was also performed by other arsenals and depots leaving the total number converted unclear. This rifle is a very good example which is made up on a WWII receiver. T105E1 aperture rear sight. Blade front sight with protective ears. The bbl. which is correctly dated has a turned down area ahead of the receiver to accept the M1D mount. The rear handguard is a shorter replacement which fits between the scope base and bbl. band. The scope bracket is in the correct style with 50 detent clicks and has the compression washer installed. The telescopic sight is marked on the nomenclature plate "TELESCOPE / M84 / SERIAL NO. (boxed) 38692". Turrets have square hinged dust caps. Ocular lens has rubber eye cup. Objective lens with sliding sunshade. Non tapered post reticle with horizontal crosshair. All visible parts markings are "SA" except safety is "IHC". Stamped trigger guard. Prong type flash suppressor. Walnut stock set. Buttstock is unmarked except for 2 encircled "P" proofs under grip. Lace on leather cheek piece marked "MRT / 11-62". Late type green web sling. CONDITION: telescope optics appear slightly clouded but serviceable. Ocular lens has crack extending from 12 o'clock to center and 8 o'clock to center. stock set has a good appearance with moderate wear and handling marks. Rear handguard has less wear. Cheek pad has staining, most notable in stitching area with several loose grommets. Metal retains 70% original finish. Bbl., scope block and gas cylinder have notably darker finish with less wear.
