ENGRAVED REVOLVER. Cal. 31. S# 124533. Bbl. 6" octagon with dovetail mounted brass blade front sight. Top flat has engraved "Saml Colt" marking in the old English style. Five shot round cylinder with stagecoach scene roll engraving. Blue & case colored finish with silver finished brass backstrap & small round trigger guard. Ornate revolver featuring approximately 75% engraving coverage in the number 2 style from the shop of renowned master engraver Gustave Young. Lower left side of barrel lug is marked "2". Vine type floral pattern scroll covering the frame, rear half of barrel with additional coverage on the loading lever lug, grip straps & hammer. Special features include fox head on left side of barrel lug, script engraved Colt patent marking on left side on frame & wolf's head on both sides of hammer. Barrel, frame, grip straps & cylinder have matching serial numbers. The letter "I" is found below the serial number in frame on gripstraps, designating ivory grips. One piece ivory grips have scrimshaw highlights at butt. Serial number indicates manufacture in 1856 prior to the American Civil War. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: factory walnut casing with red velour fitted interior. Case contains two cavity bullet mold, eagle flask, screw driver, Eley Bros. cap tin, several conical bullets & case key. Case exterior has lightly worn finish showing numerous small dents, scratches & handling marks. Interior cloth shows age related fading & wear. CONDITION: barrel retains 70% lightly faded blue showing edge & muzzle wear with freckling & small dents. Cylinder retains excellent scene with 70% fading blue. Frame, hammer & loading lever case colors are largely visible with a darkened appearance. Grip straps show over 50% silver finish with edge & carry wear. Ivory grips have acquired a pleasing yellow appearance with age. Crisp mechanics. Lightly pitted bore retains strong rifling. (01-20836/DS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-10,000.
