Officer Inscribed Civil War Moore's Patent 7-Shot Single Action Revolver, #7887, .32 RF cal., 4'' octagonal barrel with blade front sight, marked ''Mf'd. for Smith & Wesson by Moore's Patent Firearms Co.'' on top flat, barrel and cylinder unit swing to right for loading/extraction (rod mounted under barrel) when button release at top right recoil shield is depressed; round 7-shot cylinder with fine line decoration; floral-engraved brass frame has matching gripstraps, the backstrap being engraved ''Col. P. H. O'Rorke/140th N Y Vol'' within a line border; one-piece varnished walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1861-63, in just a few thousand guns. Condition is very good, the barrel/cylinder with no original blue but a cleaned gunmetal gray with scattered erosion, the brass with traces of original silver plating and otherwise medium age patina. Grips are solid with light age/use marks and no original finish but fit well. Barrel address is mostly clear; engraving is sharp; action functions but is sticky; bore is clean with overall black powder erosion and good rifling. This is a scarce pistol with the Smith & Wesson barrel marking, as S&W sued Moore for infringing on its bored-thru cylinder patents; doubly so with its backstrap inscription to a Civil War officer, and thus well worth further research. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)(Doug Beneck collection)
