Only Known Engraved and Gold-Inlaid Colt London 3rd Model Dragoon in .44 caliber percussion revolver, 7.5" barrel, S/N 7, originally engraved and gold inlaid. This particular Colt is the only known gold inlaid London Dragoon and was likely a display model used by Samuel Colt for promotional purposes. The left side of the barrel lug depicts a centaur shooting a Colt Dragoon and a British lion also shooting the same on the right side. The balance of the Colt is engraved in light scroll motif. This pistol shows all matching numbers with a dark patina and some light-to-moderate erosion and minor pitting. The markings are light, but visible. The grips have been lightly refreshed, but fit well and are full dimensions with a lovely burl grain. The edges are still fairly sharp. The aging is consistent with a damp climate and lack of oiling. Any original percussion Colt with gold inlay is rare, but a Dragoon is exceptionally rare and this is the only original gold inlaid Dragoon currently known in private hands. It is illustrated in full color in "The Colt Engraving Book" by R.L. Wilson and also illustrated in "Colt and It's Collectors" on page 87. Absolutely a museum quality rarity!
