by Denis Milhomme entitled "AJO Mountain Sunset", hand signed and measures 91/2"x81/2" . Bio- Living a youth that encapsulated a typical rural New England childhood, young Denis epitomized the young kid full of energy and love of his surroundings. He early on displayed artistic leanings, though, and benefited from instruction as early as age 8. Progress in drawing covered exposure to pencil, pastel, watercolor and finally oils by the age of 15. Yet, Denis was still anchored in the usual teen activities and early jobs that kept him wed to the outdoor and nature. His early marriage was a misstep and in moving on with his life, Denis severed his Lowell, Massachusetts origins and headed West for California. A variety of jobs left him unfulfilled and he gradually drifted into art. That change was enhanced with professional workshops, study with well known artists such as Robert Abbett, and participation in art fairs that were then emerging as venues for new and relatively unknown artists. Just before age 30, Denis met his true Northstar and lifetime mate, Lorene, who injected the missing ingredient of confidence in his own worth as an artist. Lorene's prodding and encouragement coupled with her muse-like qualities, led to the moment of truth for Denis like so many artists, that being cutting the cord from wages to embark on a career as an easel painter. The formative years of observation, study, experimentation and innate sense of color and wonderment distilled quickly into an unmistakable style of realism that Denis refers to as "natural realism". In his hands, though, it is not photographical or photorealism, but a manifestation of his love of nature and compulsive dedication to the details of his subject matter. Denis and Lorene created the perfect house and studio location with their move to the edge of Sequoia National Park in the verdant surroundings of trees, rivers, and mountains, yet so close to the desert whose subject matter continues to extract new sensations and visceral interpretations of what he sees before him. Milhomme's career is now firmly established with important awards such as Arts for the Parks Region II Winner-1993, Arts for the Parks "Best in Landscapes-2006', Arts for the Parks Franklin Mint Award, Best of Show @ Phippen Western Art Show-1993, First Place in Oils at Southwest Art Festival, and many others now on his resume. He is especially proud of his participation in the American Masters show at the Autry National Center, the Quest for the West show and sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of Native American and Western Art, and several miniature shows such as Small Wonders-Great Works at the Cowboy Hall and the Settlers West Gallery Miniature show. Denis Milhomme's paintings are now adorning the walls of many important collectors. Some question his concentration on smaller canvasses, but his labor intensive approach inherently limits production. Naturally, his gallery representation suffers from lack of production and inventory because his works sell almost immediately upon hanging. Nevertheless, Milhomme is content to produce 35-40 works each year which he can proudly offer his followers, knowing that few will go unsold.
