PARKER GRADE I TOP LEVER HAMMER GUN WITH

EXCEPTIONALLY RARE FLYING PIGEON "THE PARKER TRAP GUN" BUTTPLATE. Cal. 10 Ga., 2 7/8". S# 33308. Page 392 and 393 of "The Parker Story" illustrate and discuss both hammer and hammerless guns fitted with this buttplate. It seems it was H. D. Folsom of New York that originated this marketing idea. The authors state "no gun with a flying pigeon buttplate on it has been located". Well folks, here it is! Gun matches all specifications in serial number ledger with its 30" laminated steel bbls. Parker Bros. name and address are on plain unmatted rib. Bbl. flats are stamped with 1878 patent date, "L", and unstruck weight of 4 lb. 12 oz. Frame size "2" is stamped on bottom of lump. Top lever action that uses doll's head extension has all correct markings on water table and is engraved with sprays of scroll. Action also features late style reinforced breakoff and check hook. Capped pistol grip buttstock of lightly figured American walnut measures 14" over flying pigeon buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip and a vacant German Silver shield is at top of grip. Matching splinter forend has typical Parker release with patent date on latch. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .797", L .797". Restriction: R .002" (essentially CYL), L .012" (IC). Min. Wall Thickness: R .042", L .042". STOCK: DAH: 2 3/4". DAC: 1 7/8". LOP: 14". CAST: neutral. WEIGHT: 8 lb. 8 oz. CONDITION: fair to good, bbls. retaining most of an old reblack. Action is dark, but is not pitted, appears to be cold blued. Traces of case hardening color are evident where protected. Stocks are sanded and dull. Checkering has been recut. It appears that comb has been reshaped. Bores are shiny but show light pitting throughout. Action is loose. Locks are good. Buttplate shows considerable wear, with checkering gone at heel. There are no noted chips or breaks. (01-21788/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
