PRESENTATION CIVIL WAR CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER

“LT. MICHAEL HALM, 5TH OHIO BATTALION CAVALRY”. Unusual “Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham” cavalry officer saber with panoply of arms decorating basket, folding languet, 36” etched blade, brass relief decorated scabbard mounts and inscription on throat: “Presented / Lieut. M. Halm / by his / Employees”. Sharkskin grip, brass back strap with raised relief eagle on pommel.
Michael Halm (1821-1901) Halm ran a cabinet manufacturing company in Columbus Ohio when the war began. He enlisted at 42 years old June 1862 as lieutenant in 5th Ohio battalion Cavalry, a 6-month unit, was promoted to captain & quartermaster in September and would resign February 1863. The 5th never left Ohio guarding the border with Kentucky. His workers gave him a fancy saber. CONDITION: very good overall, blade is gray/white with all discernible etching. Grip retains about 70-80% sharkskin with balance chipped, complete tight twisted wire wrap. (02-19180/JS). $2,000-3,000.
