PROFESSIONALLY CARVED POLYCHROME RUM HORN  DAVID
BREWER, 1759". About 7"x4", exceptional, professionally carved French & Indian war half horn, probably made in England. Similar examples of professional polychrome horns are found in several texts. This horn is profusely carved w/ full coverage as seen in photos. British coat of arms, map & towns, 4 line inscription "DAVID BREWER / HIS RUM HORN / AT QUEBEECK A&O / DOM SEP 1759". Vertically on either side a pewter spout “BRITISH / COLOURS / ON / ALL / FRENCH / FORTS / AYE READY”. Col. David Brewer, (1732-1799) a veteran of both French & Indian & Revolutionary Wars. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: horn is accompanied by 8.5" x 4.5" handwritten note dated July 8th, 1893 stating "This horn belonged to David Brewer who fought w/ the rangers during the French & Indian uprisings. He was my great great grandfather. Henry D. Hobson." A first edition 1883 "Journals of Major Robert Roberts" by Franklin Hough accompanies that David Brewer is mentioned many times. Also accompanying is a file of research & correspondence. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, crisp detail & contrast. Minor insect damage. Sm. original plug is retained in wooden base, plug missing from the pewter mouthpiece. Note is archivally framed w/ old transcription w/ notes from 1978 on reverse of frame.
