Pair of cased SA Army revolvers, .44-40 caliber, 7½” barrels with traces of nickel finish, Deluxe Burl Maple screw-less grips in an old case from the period of use, Serial #82308 and 82315. Additionally, the lot includes a silver pocket watch contained the left corner, inscribed “EL PASO-TEXAS” with the initials, “JWC” at center purportedly for Jack Wallace Crawford, AKA Captain Jack Crawford. The English lever set watch is marked, “ACME LEVER H. Samuel, Manchester” with British sterling touch marks, Swiss movement and is not running at the time of description.
Included in the lot is an original broadside advertiser for “Heroes of the Plains”, 1881. A production that starred Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hickok, Texas Jack, Captain D.L. Payne and Jack Crawford, whose likeness is illustrated at the lower right. These pistols were last sold by Little John’s on October 22, 1989 when they were consigned by noted arms collector Jimmy Fowler of Period Galleries, Scottsdale, Arizona.
This pair are in fair to good condition with traces of nickel finish still present, good markings, some scattered erosion and light to moderate pitting. Additionally, the pistols show matching numbers and most markings are good with a couple of the numbers light but visible under magnification. The grips are very good and were likely added later, when the pistols were cased, but are old and attractive. The front sights are nearly full height, with one slightly better than the other. The bores are fair to good and may clean (Blanks?).
The case shows age and is probably period with purple velveteen interior showing wear at the contact points and normal aging. The exterior is Walnut with English style brass hardware. We were unable to locate this set on the Fort Bliss inventory or other sources of research. However, we do remember the set and Jimmy Fowler owned some of the best American historic Winchester and Colt firearms in his era of collecting and he prized this pair. Est.: $6,000-$12,000. (Antique).
