Peter Kunz Percussion Pistol .40 Cal. NVSN
Peter Kunz (1790-1862) who was trained in Allentown and worked in nearby Whitehall Township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. His brother Jacob (1780-1876) was also a talented gunmaker and later moved to Philadelphia. The Kunz brothers are widely regarded as among the finest American gun makers of the "Golden Age" in the early national period. The Kunz brothers are featured in many books on early American firearms, Jacob Kunz has pistols in the Metropolitan Museum of art. This is a single shot 'Muff' style pistol. 3 1/2" smoothbore octagonal barrel with traditional blade and notch sights, top flat is marked 'PHILADA', and "P. KUNZ" signed on the left sideplate, wooden ramrod, smooth bag grip, small silver wrist escutcheon, minimal floral engraved hammer, sideplates, and triggerguard. Two-cock hammer action is crisp/tight, the grip is excellent, has been varnished, and the metal finish is a mixture of dull blue/gray, bore is very good. Incredibly scarce. Peter Kunz pistols don't come up for sale very often.
NRA Condition-Very Good. Antique Firearm.
