Matched Pair of British Pattern 1759 Eliott's Light Dragoon Flintlock Pistols, NVSN, .66 ''carbine bore'' smoothbore cal., 8.75'' round barrels with turned rings and two deeply struck proofmarks at breech, one breech additionally marked ''(crown)/GR/(broad arrow)'', no sights; steel lockplates having elongated rear teats with deeply struck ''(large crown)/GR'' ahead of cock and ''Tower'' vertically behind, showing slight differences in hand finishing; brass furniture including serpentine sideplates opposite locks, triggerguards, buttcaps and single ramrod thimbles. Walnut fullstocks with raised oval aprons surrounding barrel tangs, raised carved finials at rear of lockplates and to rear of sideplates; one with ''FD'' and two ''Xs'' stamped in the wood behind sideplate and ''(broad arrow)'' over ''B'' and ''O'' above buttcap, the other with ''D'' and two ''Xs'' behind sideplate and ''B O'' over ''(broad arrow)'' on right grip. Both pistols appear to be in original flintlock configuration, the touchhole areas having been polished when barrels were re-browned. Condition to both is very good to fine for their age and type, the barrels having been cleaned and re-browned at one point, the iron surfaces otherwise having a smooth brown patina; brass parts are bright. Screw head slots are straight and unmarred; one brass-tipped hardwood ramrod may be original, the other a possible replacement. Stocks are fine with clear markings, only minor age dings from their period of service, pleasing color and a coat of later varnish. Actions are smooth and tight; bores appear very good with light rust that should easily clean. Large, partitioned walnut case is of modern make, containing a reproduction copper and brass powder flask, reproduction brass single-cavity bullet mold, quantity of cast lead balls, and working key, all in very good condition. In 1759 Colonel George Augustus Eliott was tasked with raising and training the new 15th Regiment of Dragoons, initially named ''Eliott's Light Dragoons'' and later renamed ''The King's Own Royal Dragoons.'' The pistols they were equipped with were of Eliott's own design and became known as the Pattern 1759 or Eliott's Light Dragoon pistol. They saw service during turbulent times within the British Empire, including both the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Est.: $5,000-$7,500/pair. (Antique)(Joe Poyer collection)
