Made in Suhl, Germany by Gerbruder Merkel and sold through Timner G.M.B.H. Coblenz in 1928. Barrel is engraved on left barrel "Major J.W. Downer U.S. Army". When googled, a John W. Downer comes up who received the Distinguished Service Cross as a member of the 1st Division in Beaumont, France in 1918. After being gassed he directed fire and aided tremendously in advancing his battalion. A very interesting man if this is the same individual. 27" blued Krupp steel barrels with matted Sporting Goods Distributor marked rib, rifle sights, extractors, and claw scope bases. Barrels are chambered in 12 gauge over 8x72R caliber rifle with 2-1/2" chambers and Full and Full chokes. Coin finished game scene engraved scalloped action with side clips, double triggers(front being set), Greener cross bolt and side safety, and top tang barrel selector. Action has deep chiseled floral and raybuck scene on right panel, dog and fox scene with "Original Merkel Anson System" marking on bottom and bugling hirsch scene on left panel with floral background. Walnut checkered pistol grip stock with right cheekpiece, ebony diamond wrist inlays, and horn butt plate and grip cap. Checkered walnut splinter forearm with ebony tip inlay and latch release. LOP: 14-1/4". DAC: 1-1/4". DAH: 2-1/4". CALIBER: 12/8x72R. S/N: 11424. FFL STATUS: Curio & Relic.
CONDITION
Overall 90% fading barrel blue with light handling wear and scratches. Action has dull gray appearance with sharp engraving. Wood has traces of finish with light coat of added oil and small chip behind action on right side with checkering starting to flatten and some minor scuffs and dings. Good bores and mechanics.
