34.25" single-edged blade 1.25" wide at forte.  French "An XI" pattern with three-branch brass guard, ovoid langlets, and single recurved quillon with wire-wrapped leather grip. Steel scabbard with brass mounts. Fire-blued and gilt panoplies of arms featuring American flags. On the reverse, an engraved American eagle with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in a ribbon. Blade also lightly engraved with "Garde Nationale Artillerie" on reverse with "Liberte Ordre Public". A presentation inscription on the pommel and backstrap reads "Presented May 1, 1822 by the/Tennessee State Militia/To/Major General Samuel Houston". Obverse ricasso marked "Solingen" with "S&K" on reverse. This saber was carried throughout the Texas Revolution, but most notable the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, in which Houston and just over 900 men attacked nearly 1,400 Mexicans under the command of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Lasting less than half an hour, the battle would bring about the end of the revolution, and secured a peace treaty paving the way for Texan independence. **Good condition overall. Blade shows some tarnishing and oxidation from age with some scratching and marring of finish from age and use. Gold fire blue remaining with some visible gilt in engravings. Some verdigris in low areas of guard with wire coming loose from grip. Scabbard shows matching oxidation and patches of rust scaling. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own one of the most martial arms in American history, carried by Texas' most significant founding father.** Provenance Sam Houston Family Collection “Battle for Texas: The Experience”, San Antonio, Texas $100,000-$300,000
