RIFLE.
Cal. 58. S# NSN. Bbl. 36" smooth bore of 58 caliber; originally 54 rifled. Mfg. 1824 per lock plate and top tang. Flayderman reference indicates 1821-1823. Correct lock plate markings plus "Vt.", "US" and "JN" at rear of barrel. Left flat of stock has "JW" cartouche. "A.V" on stock behind trigger guard. Top of buttplate "US" marked. Pattern models made at Harper's Ferry and contracts given to various suppliers including Derringer, 2 Johnsons (Robert for this rifle plus R & JD) and others. 5,000 made by R. Johnson; 39,067 by all contractors. Conversions to percussion generally performed in 1840's and they were often used in the Civil War. Usually referred to as the "Common Rifle" to help differentiate them from the Hall's of the period. Configuration includes large oval patch box on right side of buttstock; this one stamped "JE" twice to read from top or bottom. Inside of patchbox is "XVIIII" that may represent "19" assuming "IXX" not known to applicator. Trigger bar, sear and bridle numbered 4. CONDITION: good general appearance with forward portion of stock removed. Barrel has brown to plum tone from refinishing. All markings very clear. Light oxidation throughout with brown tone on patch box cover. Poor bore. Inoperable due to broken lockplate parts; sear split at pivot plus cracked bridle. (01-21767/NW). ANTIQUE. $650-900.
