RARE 12-STAR EARLY CIVIL WAR SECESSION FLAG.

60” x 40” Cotton flag, treadle machine sewn, 1/4” red binding w/ 10 cotton twill looped tabs for attachment, double-applique cotton stars configured in 3 horizontal rows of four 5” stars, 12th star is thought to represent Missouri which never could secede due to early Union occupation & equal Union & Confederate sentiments. 11 Confederate states seceded, Tennessee being the 11th on June 8, 1861. Missouri’s Confederate secession convention was forced out of capital by Union army under General Nathaniel Lyon. Sterling Price, convention president & Governor Claibourne Jackson fled capital June 14. Price was Missouri State militia commander & would become Confederate major general always trying to occupy Missouri & bring it into Confederacy till the end. Governor Jackson died while planning to retake Missouri in 1862. There has never been definitive proof of the pattern being for Missouri secession, but the survival of several w/ similar construction & materials supports theory. CONDITION: very good overall as framed. About 3” of fly end & 6” (2 stripes) folded under to fit 63” x 37” shadowbox frame. Blue color in canton has faded to light brown. Red is strong, soiling & staining. (02-17516/JS). $5,000-7,000.
