MUSKET IN GOOD ORIGINAL FLINT CONDITION WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. All but 3,580 of the 30,421 1840 muskets produced were converted to percussion at Springfield in 1851. Standard configuration with 40" barrel held by three springs retained bands. Rear of barrel is stamped with "VP" and eagle head proofs. "NH" is on left flat. Barrel tang is dated 1842. Lock with chamfered plate having rounded tail is fitted with round bodied cock with circular central hole forming reinforce. Rounded brass pan is inset, bridled frizzen has straight toe, feather spring has bulbous finial. Internal inspection reveals identical makers marks on all individual parts except main spring and all appear to be original and not replaced except the possibility of frizzen which is of the correct style, but numbers and letters do not match. Lock plate is marked with eagle and "US" at center. "SPRING" "FIELD" "1842" is stamped vertically on tail. Walnut stock is iron mounted. Buttplate is stamped "US" and with rack number "27". A bronze tack with the number "729" is in front of trigger guard. U.S. inspectors marks are not found. Musket has correct type trumpet shaped ramrod. Brass collection tag marked "M22" is affixed to sling loop. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: musket is accompanied by correct style bayonet with retaining ring has 18 1/4" triangular blade stamped "P" (?). CONDITION: fine. Barrel and furniture showing cleaning to bright polish over some very light pitting most prevalent on buttplate. Lockplate is mostly gray with silver highlights. Stock retains most of its original oil finish with fair number of marks and scratches. Bore is bright with some scattered pits. Lock is fine. Stock is sound without any noted cracks. Bayonet shows cleaning to gray brown patina and fits musket well. (01-22761/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
