RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL WHITNEY SECOND MODEL, FIRST

TYPE NAVY REVOLVER. Cal. 36. S# 444. Bbl. 7 1/2". Whitney navy revolvers are common to market of later varieties however of the approximate 2,000 early 2nd models which were made in 1860, survival is very low especially in high condition & this is the finest example we know of. The state of Virginia bought 500 & the 2 identified survivors are of same configuration. When Spiller & Burr started their mfg. in Richmond, VA before moving to Atlanta, this model was their pattern. The 2 surviving Spiller & Burr 1st models have nearly identical measurements & characteristics other than frames on the Confederate copies are brass. Revolver exhibits the same ball & pin loading lever catch, open frame & single safety slot at rear of hammer. You will not find a better 2nd Model Whitney of the type bought by state of Virginia at the beginning of war. CONDITION: revolver retains most of its original finish, bbl. has 90% original bright blue, cyl. has much of its thinning original blue w/ crisp rolled patriotic scene. Grips retain most of their original varnish w/ edge wear. Mechanically crisp w/ bright shiny bore. (01-20221/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-5,000.
