CONFEDERATE SHORT SWORD. 23 1/2” Overall, 18 1/2” heavy dbl. edged blade w/ central spine. This unique design has cast fish scale grip w/ raised relief rectangular panel: “J D / A” in pommel, separate cast S shaped cast cross guard w/ stippled gutters & filing reminiscent of certain Confederate belt plates. Whoever this unknown early Alabama maker was, they most likely also made belt plates. Jeff Davis Artillery is one of the few artillery regiments chronicled through the war in a recent 385 pg. text, which is included w/ this lot, the elite Jeff Davis Artillery was organized in Selma, Alabama. The unit was immediately transferred to Virginia & took part in most every major battle w/ the Army of Northern Virginia, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and finally the Appomattox Campaign. There are a handful of these swords known, at least one example, none approaching the condition & clarity of markings on this example. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 385 pg. “From Selma to Appomattox: The History of the Jeff Davis Artillery” by Lawrence LaBoda. 1994 Dated letter of authenticity & bill of sale. CONDITION: very good overall, hilt & cross guard have mixed chocolate/mustard patinas. Blade has iron patina w/ old sharpening & file marks.
