RARE CASED PAIR OF MORTIMER PERCUSSION CONVERSION
DOUBLE BARREL HOWDAH PISTOLS OF ADMIRAL SCOTT. Cal. 26 bore (approx .56 cal.). Smooth bore. 9 3/4" Twisted bbls. w/ central ribs are engraved “H. W. MORTIMER LONDON / GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY”. Iron mounted w/ percussion conversion locks marked “HARRIS” lightly engraved w/ dbl. line scalloped borders, hammers are engraved en suite. European walnut stocks w/ checkered bag grips are steel mounted & attach to bbls. w/ single keys through oval silver escutcheons. Trigger guards have panoplies of arms engraved on bows & have stylized pineapple finials. Tailpipes have similar pineapple themed engraving. Butts are elegantly carved as 8-leaved flowers. Guns retain their original ramrods, 1 w/ a steel powder measure, the other horn tipped w/ iron worm. The only Admiral Scott that seems to possibly fit the inscription is Sir James Scott (1790-1872), a long serving British naval officer. He entered British service in 1803 retiring in 1865, he had good service as a captain in the American Revolutionary war, he attained the rank of admiral in 1854, possibly about the date these guns were converted to percussion. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: mahogany case w/ inlet D ring handle engraved “ADMIRAL SCOTT”, key lock closure, is lined in green baize & contains a leather covered 3 compartment flask & a brass scissor mold. CONDITION: very good. Metal overall is gray patina w/ traces of finish in protected areas stocks are sound & solid retaining some original varnish. Mechanics are fine w/ smooth clean bores. Case is sound w/ a 1” x 1/2" corner piece missing & some repairs & varnish. Interior cloth is worn w/ reductions. (01-17229/JS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-8,000.
