RARE COLT 1902 PHILIPPINE MODEL DOUBLE ACTION
REVOLVER. Cal. 45. S# 43751. Bbl. 6". 1 of only approximately 4,600 Model 1902 double action revolvers (commonly referred to as the Model 1902 "Phillipine" or "Alaskan") mfg. by Colt under contract for the U.S. Army. Essentially a modified Model 1878, the Model 1902 revolvers featured an enlarged trigger and trigger guard, with a stronger mainspring to negate soft strikes for the .45 Colt cartridge. This example, mfg. in 1900, is marked "45 COLT." on the left side of the bbl, with Colt's single line address marked across the top. Left side of frame is marked with the encircled Rampant Colt logo, followed by a "R.A.C." (Rinaldo A. Carr) inspector proof at the tang, which is also present on the left side of the forward trigger guard web, and on the rear face of the cyl. Right side of frame is marked "JTT" (Captain John T. Thompson) at the tang, followed by "1902" and "US". Left side of forward trigger guard web is stamped with an upside down "34", which is also present on the left side of the frame, beneath the grip panel. Metal components exhibit a period reapplied blue finish overall. Frame is mounted with 2-piece Colt checkered brown hard rubber grips. Matching numbers are present on the frame and cyl. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: generic soft case. CONDITION: metal components retain the majority of their reapplied blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear that show through to brown and gray patinas, scattered marks from handling and storage, as well as scattered areas of light to mild pitting that is present primarily below the blue finish. Grip straps retain a mostly mottled brown patina. Very bright bore, exhibiting scattered spots of pitting, while retaining strong rifling throughout. A previous owner has added thick paper spacers between the mainspring and frame, with the action functioning properly in single action, but not holding on cock in double action. Grips are very good overall, exhibiting few scattered marks from handling and storage. A rare example of a Colt Model 1902 "Philippine" Model double action revolver. PROVENANCE: from Martin Lane Historic & Western Americana Lifetime Collection. (24-2729/MLW). CURIO. $1,000-1,500.
