UNDERHAMMER RIFLE. Cal. 45 smoothbore. NSN. The 28 3/4" octagon bbl. fitted w/ adj. V-notch spring type rear & silver bead front sights is marked “N. KENDALL” “WINDSOR VT” “PATENT” in front of pivoting block breech loading mechanism which resembles the Snyder in operation. Block locks in position w/ thin latch which engages slot in rear of bbl. cutaway. Firing pin is actuated by percussion type hammer which hits rising square pin w/ angled top which cams firing pin forward. Top tang is stamped “SMITH’S” “IMPROVED” “PATENT” “STUD” “LOCK” as found on many N. Kendall rifles. Four ramrod pipes are affixed to bottom of bbl. Maple stock w/ some curly grain has long Roman nose comb & is brass mounted. Trigger guard has swell at rear forming grip. Crescent buttplate has no bottom return. Top of plate is stamped “384” (serial number?). CONDITION: fair to good, iron parts cleaned to relatively smooth gray brown patina. Stock refinished. Brass nicely toned. Bottom plate for firing mechanism is a newly made replacement. Bore is rusted. Lock operable. (01-21162/MGM). ANTIQUE. $700-1,100.
