RARE NAVAL CANNON HAND SPIKE.
Overall length: 95". A rare Naval artillery item seldom seen on the market. This is believed to be a Naval hand spike used to position heavy shipboard cannons. The wood appears to be oak. The 14" head has an 11" x 3 1/2" heavy iron bracket surrounding it. The face of the head is clearly stamped, “W.N.Y.”. Below the “W.N.Y.” is a symbol that greatly resembles a Confederate naval anchor & crossed cannon insignia. Below the insignia is “64”. This hand spike came from a collection outside of Atlanta & was purchased from an estate in North Carolina. It is possible therefore, that this is from the Wilmington Naval Yard of N.C. & represents an incredibly rare Confederate naval artifact. It is also possible the central figure is not a Confederate anchor & crossed cannon insignia & that “W.N.Y.” stands for Washington Navy Yard. Further research is needed on this wonderful artifact. CONDITION: item shows overall light wear. The Navy Yard & date stampings are quite clear. (02-15127/BF). $800-1,600.
