DRUM CARRIED BY MUSCIAN JOHN W. LEWIS. 16.25” diameter x 12.5” high, wonderful large, illustrated Baltimore maker’s label of Francis Sauer. There is penciled inscription on top head stating drum’s use by John W. Lewis, Co. “I” 1st Maryland Infantry. Drum is “as found” complete and original. The original drumsticks and carrying strap are still with drum. It was sold by grandson of Musician Lewis and a cassette recording was made by grandson relating facts about drum as told by his grandfather who carried drum. For many years displayed in the collection of late Maryland Civil War collector Arthur "Gil" Barrett. John W. Lewis entered service as drummer in Company “I” 1st Maryland infantry August 18, 1862, he served as drummer till discharge May 31, 1865. He was charged for breaking drum head and snare in December 1864 and acessed $1.52 out of his pay. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: polaroid photo of grandson Charles Lewis making pencil inscription on drum head, cassette recording by grandson relating drum’s history. CONDITION: very good and solid, complete & original including ropes, snares, and patent rope clamps. Painting is dark with grime, chipping to right side not effecting central motif of Liberty waking carrying shield. The cotton strap used to carry drum has the leather attachment broken off.
