INCLUDING THE ACTUAL BULLET TAKEN OUT OF A SAILOR IN THE NIGHT ATTACK OF FORT SUMTER & HIS RARE GOLD MAGNIFICENT PRISONER OF WAR BADGE LISTING THE 4 PRISONS HE WAS IN. Mounted in a 13" x 15" period frame is a 5" x 8" statement written by James Walstead "I was wounded by this ball in the left shoulder & taken prisoner in the night attack on Fort Sumter, Charleston, S.C. on the night of the 8th September 1863. The ball was in my shoulder for five months. I was a prisoner for 13 months and 10 days. James Walstead Late U.S.S. Powhatan". The approximate .69 cal. ball is mounted in velvet in a patriotic image case measuring 3" x 3 1/2". Below that in a 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" image case is a beautiful engraved POW medal marked "JAMES WALSTEAD SURVIVOR OF Libby, Richmond, Va 1863 / Andersonville, Ga, 1863 / Savannah, Ga, 1864 / Charleston, S.C. 1864". Badge's 1.25" x 1.5" drop is the graphic image of a Union POW beating off an attack of guard dogs. This magnificent rare gold gilded POW survivor medal is not to be confused w/ the lesser quality brass "ladder badges" that are usually encountered. This gilded badge is both rare and very beautiful and very rarely encountered. This gold piece is of the highest quality & name of prisons individually engraved. Along w/ this framed set are dozens of records from the National Archives & framed original pension document w/ engraved patriotic vignette along w/ a photograph of Walstead's ship Powhatan. Walstead was one of the few POW's to survive both Libby & Andersonville. Also included is original vignetted discharge certificate. (02-16678/1447). $7,000-9,000.
