RARE US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1867 NAVY CADET ROLLING
BLOCK SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal. 50-45 CF. NSN. Bbl. 32 1/2". 498 of these rifles were made at Springfield Armory during 1868 using a Rolling Block action purchased from Remington & utilizing a muzzle loading bbl. w/ a brazed in liner. The receiver tang is marked "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A. / PAT. MAY 3D NOV. 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866". The correctly marked receiver has a sm. anchor on the left side above the trigger guard & on the right side has "P" proof above the "F.C.W." which is Frank C. Warner. Breech block has correct concave configuration under chamber & stud type extractor. 2 leaf folding rear sight w/ aperture midway of the long leaf. Stud type front sight. Cleaning rod is present. Walnut stock set. Forend is retained by 2 solid bands w/ band springs. Buttstock is unmarked. Buttplate is marked on tang "US A27". UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 16" triangular blade socket bayonet marked on top of the 11/16" blade "US". Bayonet is fitted w/ locking ring. Bayonet has turned overall patina w/ light oxidation & scattered handling marks. CONDITION: stock set has extensive wear & handling marks throughout w/ notable loss of finish at toe. Sm. crack behind receiver tang & several cracks along trigger guard tang. Notable crack behind receiver on right side plus 5 sm. puncture holes behind receiver on left side. Forend has sm. crack on right side ahead of receiver & wear along ramrod channel. Sm. crack behind lower band. Forend tip has notably dented appearance. Metal retains traces of original blue turning gray & patina w/ wear, oxidation, scattered fine pitting & handling marks. Screw heads are notably burred. Good shiny 3 groove bore w/ scattered fine pitting throughout. (01-23711/RW). ANTIQUE. $500-700.
