RARE US WWI EXPERIMENTAL HELMET BY THE FORD MOTOR
COMPANY. This very scarce helmet was one of the experimental types submitted to the government when the US entered WWI. This type is known as an experimental helmet #8, and approx. 1,300 examples were produced by the Ford Motor Company in October of 1918. This helmet has a heavily sanded brown/green painted finish on the outside with a smooth painted finish of the same color on the inside. There is a pivoting visor on the front of the helmet featuring two eye slits that provide increased protection from small arms’ fire and shrapnel from the front. Helmet features a 3-pad leather liner with each pad having two tongues. The chinstrap is finely woven heavy web cotton. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: this helmet comes with a plexiglass display stand. CONDITION: helmet finish shows wear but is substantially intact. The liner shows moderate to heavy wear with the tongues on one pad missing. Chinstrap is complete. (02-23075/BF). $3,000-4,000.
