REMINGTON-UMC MODEL1911 FRAME WITH SAVAGE SLIDE

SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. Cal. 45 ACP. S# 12673. Bbl. 5" blued w/ "B1" above left leg; mfg. unknown (standard military profile including throat). Frame mfg. August 10, 1918 to May 24, 1919 within S# range of 1 to 15000. Appropriate markings to include "E" on left front of trigger guard, "E.E.C." inspector mark, eagle "S28" by mag. release, "18" on right front of trigger guard & "NO" proceeding digits of S# w/out period after O that is full sized. Double diamond checkered walnut grips w/ thirteen rows between large diamonds giving larger checkering than Colt; bottom of right grip stamped "RAP" (not perfectly spaced or aligned). Controls & features correct for model except hammer is Type D Colt (correct is Type B, long w/ sharp spur) as used on early Ithaca & Remington Rand & bottom of main spring housing not stamped "E". Rare slide mfg. by A. J. Savage Munitions Co. of San Diego, CA that was awarded contract on July 20, 1918 for 100,000 pistols at $14 each. Blueprints sent to Savage in August & contract was cancelled in December. Minimal parts were produced & post WW1 War Claims Board settled w/ Savage for just over $13,000 for inventory that was produced; no pistols & no documented evidence that slides were in the lot. Between WW1 & WW2 1911 slides w/ Colt's patent markings having unusual "S" marked Ordnance Bomb appeared on commercial markets & within military stores of replacement parts. Generally accepted that the "S" bomb marking is "Savage" but no documented evidence & how the government acquired them is also unknown. Slides are also void of acceptance marks w/ some appearing original military production & others of very poor quality having little resemblance to G.I. originals. During 1960s, DCM sales of Savage surplus 1911s & 1911A1s were shipped usually having "AA" (Augusta Arsenal rework mark) by front edge of slide stop along w/ "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on left side of dust cover; this one is blank. Semicircular front sight & flat topped U notch rear. Extractor is obvious replacement being proud at rear of slide. MAGS: 1 Risdon 7 rd w/ scattered light oxidation, but dark original finish. CONDITION: frame condition appears original finish approximating Colt's brushed blue which is correct for model. Feed ramp area w/out signs of wear plus sharp profiles throughout. Left side of frame has some areas of pinprick to peppery oxidation above trigger. Slight gray tone to finish w/ very light high point wear. Main spring housing w/ lanyard loop has beginning (non matching) brown patina finish. Left grip w/ light damage around screws caused by using screwdriver w/ excessively wide blade; balance good to very good having hand worn diamonds. Right grip w/ more hand wear but better appearance around screws. Worn finish & slight slot damage on all screws. Slide has high point wear along w/ frosted appearance of fine pitting. Light function wear on bbl. exterior & near excellent bore. (23-858/NW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
