Very Rare and Possibly Unique Engraved Burgess Slide-Action Repeating Shotgun, NVSN. 12 ga. 28'' Damascus barrel is engraved on top with Burgess patents from 1883 to 1892. Takedown receiver, bolt, triggerguard, upper tang and slide were left in the white, then engraved with elaborate scroll patterns and fancy borders. Top of bolt is engraved ''Buffalo N.Y., Burgess Gun Co., U.S.A.'' Similar treatment made to the iron sleeve over the stock wrist, which actuates the repeating action. Wood is above average walnut, oil finished and checkered in a pattern considered complex in 1890. There is also an original Bakelite ''Burgess Gun Co.'' buttplate. Mfg'd early 1890s. Condition is antique good to very good, with most of the barrel Damascus pattern visible and all the engraving recognizable. There is significant frosting on the white metal, but not enough to obscure the engraving. Wood has numerous handling marks and gouges, but no splits or fractures. There are two repairs -- one is a crossbolt through the forend for strengthening, the other a brazing repair to the shell lifter mechanism. Note: There were several Burgess guns that were specially engraved for display at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, and a couple are on display at the Cody Firearms Museum, as they went to Winchester upon their purchase of Burgess in 1899. This may have been one of those display guns and warrants additional research. Est.: $1,500-$3,000. (Antique)
