Rare Frank Wesson No. 1 Long Range Rifle
This rare rifle was made circa 1877 by Frank Wesson Manufacturing in Worcester, Massachusetts. There are less than 25 of these rifles known. Rifle has 34" blued tapered octagon barrel in 44-100 Wesson caliber with Wind gage front and rear fixed sight. Tang is mounted with adjustable Vernier sight and there is also a "Heel" position on the butt for said sight. Barrel is marked in script "Frank Wesson Mfg. Long Range Rifle No. 1 Worcester, Mass.", also has number "21" stamped under forearm on barrel. Case-hardened full coverage floral engraved falling block action with "Bear" and "Deer" portraits on action panels, which could possibly be the work of Nimschke. Action has a single trigger and is marked on breech "Patented July 10, 1877" with side hammer and push button release lever. Fine checkered figured walnut pistol grip stock with horn grip cap and steel checkered shotgun type butt plate. Matching checkered "Alex Henry" style walnut fore end with ebony cap. CONDITION
Barrel is fading to plum with edge wear and some light surface discoloration. Action has faded colors in protected areas with sharp engraving. Stock has been cleaned, checkering has been worn flat and has a glued crack at wrist. Good bore and mechanics. A great rifle!
