.50-70 caliber, 22" barrel with three land and groove rifling, NSN. Armory bright finish with walnut stock. Blade front sight with M1870 Trial ladder rear sight. Frame marked "[eagle]/SPRINGFIELD/1870". Lower tang marked "33" in large font. Wrist shows script "ESA" cartouche or Erskine Allen underneath saddle ring bar.  Behind the triggerguard is remnants of the small box with two initials for a firing proof. Springfield Armory records indicate that just over 300 of these experimental carbines were produced for Army trials. With only eight known by this firm to exist in museums and private collections. This piece retains the distinguishing features of this model, including the small block spur, saddle ring bar, and 11.75" forend. **Very good condition overall. The frame has been lightly cleaned with some visible cleaned pitting.  Barrel has a very light pewter patination. Stock is in good condition, with some dents and handling blemishes. Bore is excellent with sharp rifling. An excellent carbine  for the advanced collector, that rarely comes up for sale.** Provenance Ex Burton Kellerstadt Collection $10,000-$15,000
