Antique Remington-U.S. Springfield Model 1870 Breechloading Saddle Ring Carbine, NVSN, .43 CF cal., 20.5'' round barrel with blade front sight (rear sight missing), marked ''43'' at breech; large No. 1 receiver has central hammer and breechblock with auto extraction, saddle ring and bar at left side, marked ''USN/Springfield/1870'' on right side and ''Remington's Patent/Pat. May 3d Nov 15th 1864 April 17th 1866'' on top tang; iron mountings include single spring-retained barrel band, loop trigger guard and carbine buttplate; two-piece oil-finished walnut stocks. Condition is about good. Barrel and buttplate appear to have been rusted and cleaned to bright with pitting remaining; receiver is smooth gunmetal gray with sharp markings. Stocks appear to once have been wet with resulting roughness that was subsequently smoothed over. Action is crisp; bore is clean with overall etching and faint rifling. This enigmatic arm may have originated as a USN Model 1870 rifle that was rejected then sold back to Remington who altered it to carbine configuration and re-sold it to a foreign military (the caliber may be .43 Spanish), thus accounting for its lack of Navy ''anchor'' and inspector's markings. Est.: $300-$450. (Antique)
