Restored Mexican War-Era U.S. Model 1841 ''Mississippi'' Muzzleloading Percussion Rifle, by Robbins & Lawrence, NVSN, .58 cal., 33'' round barrel with blade front and simple notched rear sights, marked ''WW/P'' at breech; beveled lockplate is marked ''Robbins/&/Lawrence/U.S.'' ahead of hammer, and ''Windsor VT/1850'' vertically behind; brass furniture includes trigger guard having a long rear tang and sling swivel at front, serpentine sideplate, large right-side patchbox with hinged door opening to trap in butt containing a bullet worm, buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, two spring-retained barrel bands (front of the double-strap type with sling swivel, the band forming a nosecap retaining the correct brass-tipped steel ramrod); oil-finished walnut fullstock. Condition is good to very good as configured: A 3.375'' breech section (including top tang), perhaps from a Remington M1863 ''Zouave'' rifle (as the nipple bolster has a slightly taller flash guard that was altered to fit) was professionally mated to a later (or reproduction) .58 cal. 7-groove barrel, likely due to damage incurred while firing. Barrel retains 40% thinning brown finish; sights are the correct earlier style. Balance of the rifle appears original and unaltered: lockplate and hammer are gunmetal gray, brass has a cleaned light patina, stock is sound and smooth having normal marks of age and military use (esp. between the barrel bands), lacks inspector's mark opposite the lock. Action is very strong and smooth; bore is brilliant with deep rifling. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
