BAYONET. Blade length: 9 1/8" Bowie style blade. 13 3/4" overall. Blade is marked on left ricasso "1900" and right ricasso "US". Straight crossguard. Smooth walnut grips fastened by 2 rivets. Steel scabbard having double wired latch. Lug plus notch to limit oscillation of scabbard. These bayonets were designed to be a combination of bayonet & entrenching tool. Approved by General Buffington, the Chief of Ordnance, May 12, 1900. 2,000 bayonets were authorized but the total figure actually made was somewhat greater. The bayonets were sent to both the Philippines & Cuba. These bayonets had both good & bad points but were not universally adopted & were disposed of around 1911. Not many of these bayonets survive today making this a very desirable addition to a KRAG collection. CONDITION: blade shows cleaning plus light polishing over grind marks from being lightly sharpened & has scattered fine pitting. Balance of metal has very light pitting & sm. spots of oxidation w/ a clean appearance. Grips in good condition showing light wear. Right grip has tiny crack between rivet & cross guard w/ notable 1" crack on right corner. Scabbard has traces of blue in protected areas turning gray & patina w/ scattered areas of oxidation & light pitting. (02-21223/RW). $1,500-2,200.
