SCARCE CIVIL WAR MASS ARMS REVOLVER INSCRIBED TO
DURYEA ZOUAVE. Cal. 32. S# 2825. Bbl. 3 1/4". Five shot Adam’s Patent Pocket revolver, 3.25" oct. bbl. Brass pin front sight & fixed rear sight, checkered one-piece walnut grip. Top strap marked in 3-lines: “MADE FOR ADAMS REVOLVING ARMS CO. NY / BY MASS ARMS CO. CHICOPEE FALLS / PATENT MAY 3, 1853 JUNE 3, 1856 APRIL 7, 1857”. Left side of frame engraved in script “Chs. Fortescue / 5th Regt N.Y.V”. Charles Fortescue enlisted in the 5th New York Infantry as a 23-year-old corporal in April 1861 & was honorably discharged a sergeant May 20, 1863. According to Fortescue’s pension request, he contacted typhoid fever while in service on the Potomac & his arm has had been diseased ever since. Charles lived the last 20 years of his life at the Sandusky Soldiers home & died Dec. 27, 1923. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: file of research accompanies. CONDITION: good-very good, traces of original finish remain in protected, overall mottled gray/brown patina w/ areas of scattered pitting. Markings all crisp & easily discerned. Grip is well fit, gouge on right side in checkering. Mechanics need attention, pitted bore. PROVENANCE: ex-Collection of Lewis Leigh Jr. (01-18996/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
