A. MEANEA. This example of an antique handmade western saddle is marked in the forward end of seat & on the rear of the cantle "F.A. MEANEA MAKER CHEYENNE WT". This saddle was made post 1881 as this was when Frank Meanea started using his own maker's mark. The WT referring to Wyoming Territory. Frank Meanea apparently stopped making saddles in 1928. Frank Meanea was the nephew of E.L. Gallatin who was a famous saddle maker. By 1873, E.L. Gallatin had joined his nephew in operating the Cheyenne, WY saddlery. Saddle is made of hand tooled leather. Skirt has fleece lining. Wooden stirrups have sheet metal reinforcement. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: also included is a pair of unmarked sm. saddle bags made of hand tooled leather w/ buckle & strap closures. Straps are fastened to bags w/ copper rivets. CONDITION: saddle is in "as found" condition w/ extensive wear, scuffing, flexing & buckling. Notable lg. tear on left side exposing the wood saddle tree underneath. Has missing rosette on right side & many saddle strings are not present. Saddle bags in somewhat better condition although they have wear, scuffing & cracking but stitching is generally tight.
