STAFF & FIELD OFFICER'S SWORD BY THE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. Overall length: 39 1/4". Blade length: 31 1/4". Blade has a raised medial ridge and is etched over 13" of its length with various patriotic, military & foliate motifs. There is an etched marking near the ricasso that reads "U.S. Armory Springfield Mass". Gilded brass hilt with a double kidney guard featuring an eagle with spray of arms and a shield over a spray of arms. Embellished knuckle bow & eagle decorated pommel. Wire-wrapped sharkskin grip. Gilded brass mounted plated scabbard marked on the drag with inspector's initials "S.W.P." CONDITION: blade has substantial original factory polish. Hilt retains nearly all of its original gilded finish. Grip & wire are complete. Scabbard mounts retain nearly all of their original gilding. The body of the scabbard does have some staining & oxidation to the finish. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (02-19734-5/BF). $700-900.
