SERIAL 47640. BARREL 7.5". CALIBER 45 COLT. Letter states gun was shipped to US Government on September 24th, 1878 in a shipment of 200 guns. This gun's principle sub inspector at Springfield in 1878 was Henry Nettleton. This gun has all matching numbers to include barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The H.N. stamp can be found on the bottom of the barrel with a P, on top of the back strap, on the cylinder (with P), and on the trigger guard. The left side of the frame has 3-line patent dates along with U.S. stamp. Type 3 block style barrel address sans hyphens. Loading gate has assembly number 5145. Early donut style ejector head. What appears to be the original grips have been checkered during period of use. Hammer is correct style replacement. Ejector housing screw is a replacement as well. Condition. Barrel has not been stretched and rifling is strong but frosted with minor pitting. Barrel legends are sharp. Frame legends mostly readable with a minor bit of pitting. Overall finish is a smooth homogenous patina with no visible cancer of any kind. Crisp action that locks up correctly. Solid half cock. Grips are excellent and fit nicely. The 3rd cavalry saw action in October of 1878 with the Bannocks and in 1879 with the Utes. A historical and very pleasing example of a scarce Nettleton inspected SAA. ANTIQUE
