SCARCE JOHN DICKSON TRIGGER PLATE, EJECTOR, SINGLE

TRIGGER GAME GUN WITH FALSE SIDEPLATES MADE TO RESEMBLE A SIDELOCK. Cal. 12 Ga. 2 1/2". S# 5644 (1904). A small number of these guns were made; some to resemble sidelocks, and a few to resemble standard boxlock guns. This sidelock type example has 29" dovetailed bbls. engraved "John Dickson & Son" "63 Princes Street" "Edinburgh" on deeply swamped game rib with extension. Casehardened trigger plate action (patent use number 1110) is fitted with false sideplates and stocked to the fences, resembling a best sidelock, and features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), pivoting third fastener and single selective trigger which externally resembles the Laird trigger used by Westley Richards. This trigger was sometimes supplied with Dickson guns. Action and lockplates are engraved with traditional rose and scroll in near full coverage. Maker's name is at the bottom of each lockplate. Very finely marbled and lightly figured European walnut, straight grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over brown leather covered pad. Point pattern checkering is at grip and a gold oval engraved "L.C.T" is on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS.: Bore Diameter: R: .733", L: .734". Restrictions: R: .006" (IC), L: .012" (LIGHT MOD). Minimum Wall Thickness: R: .024", L: .025". STOCK: DAH: 2". DAC: 1 1/2". CAST: approx. 5/8" off. LOP: 14 1/4". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 12 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in "Huey" oak and leather case #761. Case is lined in scarlet cloth and has red reproduction Dickson lion label in lid. Bottom compartment is semi French fitted for accessories which include: 2 piece brass and ebony cleaning rod, ebony handled chamber brush and 3 turnscrews, an unmarked Dickson square oil bottle, and a pair of snap caps. CONDITION: fine as refinished. Bbls. retaining nearly all of a best reblack with some scattered marks. Name and address engraving picked up, other engraving thinned. Action and lockplates retain nearly all of a recolor hardening with some slight subsequent edge wear. Trigger guard is reblued, engraving considerably softened especially at grip. Stocks have most of their oil refinish, checkering worn, appears to be recut a long time ago. Bores are bright and shiny with 1 or 2 minor scattered pits in right bbl. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors slightly out of time. Trigger seems to work well. Case is very close to "as new". (22-173/MGM). CURIO. $8,000-12,000.
