SCARCE U.S. M1852 NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD DATED 1852

& FULLY FEDERALLY INSPECTED. Overall length: 34 3/8". Blade length: 27 5/8". These "original issue", federally purchased, M1852 naval officer's swords are scarce and exceptionally desirable, particularly in this condition. Single fullered blade with a tiny, narrow 15" fuller just below the spine. Blade is etched over 2/3 of its length with various military, nautical and foliate motifs. Near the ricasso, there is an etched panel that reads, "AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE MASS.". The ricasso is stamped, "P / R.B.H." on one side and "1852" on the other. Heavily gilded hilt with down turned dolphin quillon along with pierced guard having "USN", oak leaves and acorns. Embellished knuckle bow with sea monster joining the pommel. Pommel has oak leaves and acorn decoration with eagle and stars at the top. Gold wire wrapped light sharkskin grip. Original sword knot attached to the knuckle bow. Heavily gilded, brass mounted, black leather scabbard. The top mount is stamped, "AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE MASS". The back side of the drag is stamped, "P". CONDITION: blade shows areas of original factory polish with scattered, peppery discoloration. The ricasso shows a bit of oxidation. Hilt retains nearly all of its original gilded finish. Grip is complete and undamaged. Knot shows moderate wear. Scabbard mounts retain virtually all of their original gilded finish. Scabbard body remains quite solid. (02-16737/BF). $1,600-2,500.
